Springs or Neaps

To discover if a tide is a spring or neap we need to find the range of the tide. (It is not always possible to see the Moon’s phase.)

To find the range we subtract the low water height from the high water height.

Example

PNT (practice navigation tables) page 63

4th May

Time 0638

0.7 m

6.0 m range

        1118

6.7 m

       1855

0.8 m

6.0 m range

       2337

6.8 m

Therefore a range of tide of 6.0 m is a Spring tide at Dover.
